On Tuesday evening, September 6, 2011, The Foundry (www.thefoundry.info), located in Long Island City, opened its doors for the first time to the Association of Bridal Consultants (ABC) New York Chapter for an informative tour of its unique event space. Despite Tropical Storm Lee’s remnants of heavy rain across the New York boroughs that night, all registered attendees braved the weather to attend this event including Gerard and Eileen Monaghan, Co-Founders of the Association of Bridal Consultants. Allison Du Val, Managing Director of The Foundry, graciously lead the tour. A raw event space, The Foundry is a 19th Century building where originally fine varnishes were manufactured before it housed The Albra Metal Foundry. Their logo is still visible on the corner of the building at 9th Street and 43rd Avenue (seen below).
By 1906, it was one of several steel foundries in the Long Island City area that catered to the needs of New York City's riverfront manufacturers.
By the 1970's The Foundry was essentially an abandoned space, housing defunct vehicles and a mountain of debris. In 1980 the Du Val family purchased the property. The family restored and renovated the space to reflect its original industrial character, and began hosting events in 2001.
It is the only foundry in the area still standing today. Today The Foundry is a raw space facility available to rent for weddings, special events and seminars. The space is also ideal for projects such as still photography, commercials, feature films and music videos.

After The Foundry tour, attendees walked around the corner to dine at Penthouse 808 (www.penthouse808rooftop.com). Perched on the rooftop of the boutique, luxury Ravel Hotel, Penthouse 808 features breathtaking panoramic views of the New York City skyline and the Queensboro Bridge. Penthouse 808’s newly designed retractable glass roof converted the evening’s dining experience into an outdoor oasis despite the rain. During dinner, Natassa Contini, Director of Events, conducted a presentation on the merits of Penthouse 808 as an event space. Whether for a wedding, an anniversary, a bar or bat mitzvah, a bridal shower, or any other special event, Penthouse 808 provides the canvas to create a client’s special memories. Event space, food, service, custom menus and décor to help make a client’s dream event come true.
The next ABC Local Networking Group – Brooklyn / Queens / Staten Island meeting will be held on November 1, 2011, at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (B.A.M.), at 6pm.
