DIY - Save the Date Magnet

This one is soooo easy!

  1. Begin with an image that you consider emblematic of your wedding; this image used a postcard of a chapel.
  2. Enlarge or reduce the image on a color photocopier to the size of precut adhesive-backed sheet magnets, leaving room for the details.
  3. Affix slips of paper bearing your names and the wedding date to the image to create a template of the finished product.
  4. Using a color photocopier, produce as many copies as you will need, and trim to size.
  5. Glue each label to a magnet, and mail.

Eco-Friendly - Sustain & Heal Stationery

While I was at the National Stationery Show last week I discovered many eco-friendly vendors and beautiful products. I'll be featuring these lovely products throughout the following weeks.

Introducing "Sustain & Heal”, a new design from De Milo Design introduced in 2008. It is an idea that began to take shape in 2003 when Annika Buxman, De Milo's designer and letterpress print, learned about Fair Trade through 10,000 Villages, a Fair Trade handicrafts retailer that has shops in many major cities. Fair Trade is a grassroots movement that focuses on relationships with people who have been marginalized by war, weather and damaging cultural systems. Fair Trade Certification requires the producing organization to demonstrate adherence to strict Fair Trade Practices.

The invitations by “Sustain & Heal” use Fair Trade paper from Kenya, Rwanda and Bangladesh. If they can’t get it Fair Trade, the designs are supplemented by 100% Post Consumer Waste recycled paper produced by earth sustaining methods. With “Sustain & Heal” invitations your celebration sustains the planet and heals lives!

These special cards are perfect for special guests who deserve a truly creative thank you. Don't be shy about your artistic ability: You'll need to sketch only simple outlines -- the colors and the body of the fibers complete the picture -- so they are easy to make.

DIY - Crafted Bouquet and Centerpieces

The luscious blooms in this bouquet are always in season. We chose shades of pink, but a bride could fashion them in any color she wishes. What's more, you can make these paper flowers, which are suitable for formal and casual weddings, in advance. They're easy: A bouquet takes only an afternoon; all you need are a few supplies and your own loving hands.

How to make flowers and leaves: A bouquet like this one requires about 25 flowers and 10 leaves. Once you have arranged them, cover the stems in wide ribbon. You will need tissue paper, a rotary cutter or scissors, 24-gauge green cloth-covered floral wire, white craft glue in a bottle with a needle-nose tip, two Styrofoam balls (1-inch and 1 1/2-inch), artificial stamens, and green floral tape. Purchase supplies online or at crafts or floral-supply stores. If using a rotary cutter, work on a self-healing mat.

Double Leaf
To make three double leaves, stack tissue in three hues of green. Cut 2-by-3-inch rectangles through all layers; fold in half. Trim tips into points; unfold. Twist each sheet at center. Fold 18-inch floral wire in half, slip over center of leaf, and twist. Fold tips toward each other, and curl.

Long Leaf
Stack tissue in two hues of green. Cut 2-by-3-inch rectangles through both layers. Apply glue along the upper third of a 9-inch piece of floral wire; sandwich between tissue layers. Let dry. Cut a leaf shape. Separate layers of tissue.

Folded Petal

Cut several 1 3/4-by-2 3/4-inch and 1 1/4-by-2-inch rectangles from tissue paper; fold each in half lengthwise; cut one end to be rounded, and twist other end to shape. For the center, roll white tissue paper into a tiny ball; cut out a square from white tissue paper, and wrap it around the ball, twisting tissue at its base. Attach the twisted end of the ball to a piece of floral wire by wrapping with green floral tape; add petals one at a time (start with small petals and end with large ones), taping twisted ends onto floral wire. Trim floral tape; spread out petals.

Bubble Petal

Each bloom requires 12 (or six pairs) stamens attached to floral wire with floral tape and five 4-by-2 1/4-inch pieces of tissue paper. For each petal, wrap tissue halfway around 1 1/2-inch Styrofoam ball, forming a half-sphere; twist ends, and remove ball. Attach one end of a petal to the base of stamen with floral tape. Add the other petals one at a time. Trim pointy ends. Gently pull petals away from center.

Rolled Petal

Cut a 16-by-3 1/2-inch strip of tissue paper; make 2-inch accordion folds. Trim and notch one end of tissue through all layers, as shown; unfold. Insert floral wire into a 1-inch Styrofoam ball; place ball near bottom of tissue strip. Roll tissue around ball; twist bottom. Remove the ball with tweezers. Wrap floral tape around the twisted tissue and wire. Trim the floral tape.
Curly Petal Cut a 16-by-3 1/2-inch strip of tissue paper; make 2-inch-wide accordion folds. Make 3-inch-deep snips in tissue to create fringe. Wrap unfringed end around floral wire. Secure with floral tape. Run scissors blade along pieces of fringe to curl; fluff.

DIY - Make Your Own Soap!

Can you make your own soap? Why not! If anything, it's a creative exercise---and it's actually sort of fun. Not to mention it’s cheap to do, and, if you decide you like doing it, you could have yourself a nice little business. Plus, the commercial products out there are often loaded with extra stuff you don’t want (artificial fragrances, harsh surfactants, parabens, need I go on?).

Anne-Marie Faiola, founder of Bramble Berry, a company that sells soap-making supplies, shows and tells us how easy this is to do, how it's fun to do with kids, and that a good percentage of her customers actually make and sell their own soaps using her supplies.

The soap-making kit from Bramble Berry includes a few blocks of melt-and-pour soap base which contains glycerin (an ingredient you want in your soap, and that's often harvested OUT of commercial soaps and replaced with synthetic and often harsh detergents), a few bottles of essential oil (whatever you like!), a bag of cranberry seeds (or you could use any other herbs or powders), and a jar of spirulina powder (a blue-green algae that rich in nutrients). You can use really whatever you like. One person used cranberry powder b/c she loves the color, but warning: natural ingredients do change color over time. Then again, that's the beauty of natural stuff. You can buy fake red soap anywhere if you want, and what good does that do you?

So here's the quick and dirty on soap making:
As mentioned above, the Bramble Berry kit comes with spirulina powder and two essential oils, Valencia orange and lavender. Even a grapefruit, optional ofcourse, if you've got one lying around can be added in.

SEE MORE PHOTOS below:

Here's the whole shebang: Soap base, essential oils, powder, and cranberry seeds.

I love the look and feel of this stuff. It's an all-natural glycerin melt-and-pour soap base that you can buy and add anything you want to.

The soap base is really easy to cut up into little cubes (this makes it easier and quicker to melt down either in your microwave or a double boiler on the stove.

Here's a mistake one might make the first time around-- not stirring the soap base long enough once adding the cranberry seeds. Stirring and pouring too quickly will cause all the seeds to rise to the top--which is way too abrasive for anyone's skin! Anne-Marie suggests stirring for a little while (my guess is a few minutes) until the soap base goes from thin and liquidy to more viscous, allowing the floating contents to get pulled down into the base, not floating along the top.

One might think that these can make good molds, particularly the dish shaped like a leaf (a Martha Stewart product!)but it's better to go with softer molds that you can pop the soap out of later. Anne-Marie suggested recycling items around the house like yogurt cups, or other disposable containers (drink boxes, soy milk containers, etc). The soap is easy to cut after and if you layer different materials in the soap, you can create a beautiful look.

Here's one of Anne-Marie's recipe for soap.

Eco Chic Soap Ingredients:
Herbs, oatmeal, coffee, spirulina, clay, or charcoal -- for natural exfoliation
16 ounces ‘melt and pour’ organic soap base (available at any craft store) or glycerin soap base (often available at natural food stores)
1 ounce essential oil (omit for unscented soap)
Soap mold --anything you find that’s the shape you desire (empty yogurt container, tofu container)Rubbing alcohol

Directions:
1. Prep your herbs or other exfoliating ingredients. Large or sharp pieces may be too abrasive on the skin, so you want very small pieces of whatever you choose to use.
2. Cut the soap base into 1 x 1" cubes.
3. Using your microwave, heat the soap base in 30-second increments until it is fully melted—or you can also do a double boiler (metal or glass bowl inside a big stockpot with a few inches of water at the bottom).
4. Add drops of essential oil for scent, about a quarter to half an ounce in total. Remember, if you use a colored fragrance, your soap base will look less clear and take on some color. (Omit this step for unscented soap.)
5. Mix in your herbs and stir until the herbs seem mostly suspended. Be sure to stir for a few minutes so that the contents are drawn down into the soap, not just floating at the top.
6. Pour the mixture into the make-shift mold. Tip: Don't fill your make-shift soap mold all the way up. It helps for easy release to fill 85% of the way to the top and not the entire way.
7. Do one finishing touch of rubbing alcohol to finish off your soap to prevent bubbles and give it a nice smooth surface.

Wait for the soap to harden, pop or unwrap the soap out of the mold, wrap soap with saran wrap, label and enjoy the compliments you get.

Candy Friday - Elizabeth Dye's Tattered Organza Shrug

Here it is, at last. Six hundred ruffles, thirty hours at Elizabeth Dye's trusty Husqvarna, three spools of thread, and three shades of silk organza: dove grey, sea glass and ivory. All that, and it barely weighs a pound. For her friend Myra, as promised. I think I need one of these for myself. It's like wearing mist or meringue or the lightest butterfly wings. Oh, how I want one!!! This is a must have piece for every ladies wardrobe.
